Policy Exclusions

Nationwide Pet Insurance will not pay for costs associated with or resulting from the following:

Veterinary Services and Expenses
  • Veterinary services or expenses related to a pre-existing condition.

  • Veterinary services or expenses related to treatment performed before the policy effective date.

  • Diagnosis or treatment of complications or progression of excluded conditions. Intentionally caused conditions.

  • Behavioral training not medically necessary or pet obedience training.

  • Alternative care (acupuncture, chiropractic, holistic) unless prescribed by a veterinarian for a covered condition.

  • Excessive prescription expenses beyond the veterinarian's recommendation. Non-prescription food or treats, including certain types prescribed by a veterinarian.

Pet Care Items and Services
  • Boarding, housing, transportation, grooming, and various items (bedding, crates, bowls, toys, etc.).

  • Non-prescribed pet services and supplies.

  • Fees or expenses not directly related to veterinary services.

Financial and Membership Exclusions
  • Medical, wellness, or preventive care plans, clubs, subscriptions, or cash back programs.

  • Charges unrelated to veterinary services, waste disposal, records, licenses, taxes, or financial institution fees.

Specific Health Conditions
  • Veterinary expenses related to oral health conditions existing before the policy's effective date.

  • Veterinary expenses related to cruciate ligament or menisci damage during the first term of the policy.

  • Experimental or illegal diagnosis or treatment.

Conditions caused by war, rebellion, insurrection, nuclear radiation, or radioactive contamination.

Coverage-Specific Exclusions
  • Cosmetic procedures not covered by selected coverage types.

  • Breeding-related veterinary expenses.

  • Surgeries or procedures not associated with an eligible condition.

  • Veterinary expenses when the policyholder or family member is the treating veterinarian.

  • Veterinary expenses from a business with policyholder ownership or employment interest.

  • Anal gland expression services exceeding $80 per policy term, unless associated with an active pathological condition.

Age-Related Exclusions
  • If you’re enrolling a dog or cat that’s older than 8 years old in a medical plan for the first time, certain things may be excluded from coverage as pre-existing.
